I've been fascinated by all things rail for as long as I can remember. The stubby light rail cars of Baltimore led me to the loud, ever lively platforms of the New York City Subway, which then dragged me to the depths of Pennsylvania Station, surrounded by the incessant dinging of steel bells, the endless drone of synthetic and human boarding calls alike. A getaway to the Windy City with some friends in the summer of '22 was my first proper exposure to the nation's passenger railroad, Amtrak, but also my first taste of rail travel in a country that'd so quickly abandoned its roots.
After traveling several thousand miles, spending hundreds of hours in waiting rooms, on delayed trains, or in waiting rooms waiting for delayed trains, I can confidently say I enjoy every minute of it. The weird things that happen to time whilst sitting behind a red signal or waiting for maintenance crews to unbundle "equipment issues" in the middle of nowhere, while aggravating and unnerving to some, give me more time to think, observe, and question.
If I've learned anything so far, it's that it matters less how I do the journey, and more that I'm doing it in the first place. What am I looking for? Not sure, but the high iron has taken me this far.
These are where I've been, where I am right now, and where I'm going.
